A message to all members of The Future of Education

The news this past week of changes to Ning's financial model, based on
an internal memo and then confirmed on their blog, is reasonably
causing concern in the education community. Ning has facilitated
a pretty historic change in the connecting of educators, often in
self-directed ways, through the ability to "create your own social
network."I've set up a live Elluminate session for today, Tuesday,
April 20th, at 5pm Pacific Daylight Time (US) / 8pm Eastern Daylight
Time (US) / 12am Wednesday GMT, to talk about this. We'll use
the FutureofEducation.com Elluminate room: log in at
http://tr.im/futureofed. I'll open up the room 30 minutes before the
event if you want to come in early, and we'll run as long as is
needed. To make sure that your computer is configured for Elluminate,
please visit http://www.elluminate.com/support.While Ning won't be
announcing their pricing or policy changes until May 4th, they have
implied that there may no longer be the ability to create networks
that are free in return for advertising on them; and that while they
are interested in supporting the education community, their
educational programs will likely change as well. In addition to
the (appropriate) venting which I'm sure will come up tonight, this
meeting is a chance for us to define what we hope Ning will consider
as they think about the education arena--including not just pricing,
but issues like data portability. We'll also, I'm pretty sure,
be hearing from many as to what potential alternatives there are to
Ning and how to determine an appropriate path should Ning's education
offerings not be attractive. I hope you'll consider joining us
tonight. I'll try to make sure everything we do is documented on
the http://www.EducationalNetworking.com wiki, and will post the
recording from the event tonight on the front page there so that if
you are not able to attend you can play or download the
recording.Thanks,SteveSteve HargadonFounder, Classroom 2.0
