In my previous posts, I mentioned that I have been working with numerous schools in Staten Island and South Brooklyn on PBL. A starting point for teachers who are creating projects, is developing a strong essential question that will help to drive the project through the entire process.
I have to admit though, that for some time I had difficulty understanding this question. Developing an essential question has been the most challenging part of this entire process.
So what is an essential question anyway?
An essential question is a question that sparks research, is not easily answerable, and does not have a right/wrong answer. These questions need to be debatable and allow students to explore their interests. Hopefully it will spark their passions and the educators passion as well. I highly recommend that you do not discourage students in anyway. Allow them to explore and find NOT answers, but more questions.
